It was the 21st October 1966, children were at school and teachers were doing the registration. As child after child would answer the teacher saying "Ydw" to mark them being present and ready for their school day.
A rumble could be felt that grew stronger and stronger....louder and louder...
Suddenly outside the windows of the class, children could see what looked to be the mountain near the school, it was falling apart, it crumbled fast.
The mud had in seconds consumed the school with a loud crash, as windows were smashed and parts of the building collapsed.
Children and adults were buried beneath the slurry of coal and mud. Villagers of Aberfan were looking confused and wondered about the massive thud.
Thousands of villagers, nearby miners and even those far and wide came to help to aid the men, women and children affected by the disaster. No matter how quick they assembled lives burned away faster.
144 lives were lost that day. 28 adults and 116 childrens lives all swept away. May we never forget the lives lost, and the display of bravery that day.
For their memories live on, though the years pass us by. Their names held in our hearts, beneath our beautiful Welsh sky.
Aberfan, we remember and we'll never forget you.
