Yo what's up, how's it going and how you doing? Hope all is well with you.
Today my tips are going to be different. Instead i am going to be recommending you some stuff.
Top 10 essential bands you should listen to if you are just starting to listen to metal. Oh don't worry i will make the title shorter. THIS LIST WAS SO HARD TO MAKE AND IT HAS MET WITH MANY CHANGES THROUGH OUT IT'S WRITING PROCESS. IF YOU DON'T SEE A BAND YOU LOVE IN THE LIST THEY MAYBE IN THE HONORABLE MENTIONS AT THE BOTTOM!
Please take note these are just my opinions.
10: Machine Head
The mighty machine head kicks off my list by letting freedom ring with a shotgun blast. Machine head are band i have only been into for 5/6 years now. I have seen them twice and i have even met the band. Unto the locust album started my love for them. Machine Head is an American heavy metal band from Oakland, California. Formed in October 1991, the group was founded by vocalist and guitarist Robb Flynn and bassist Adam Duce. The current lineup of the band comprises Flynn, drummer Dave McClain, guitarist Phil Demmel, and bassist Jared MacEachern. Machine Head is one of the pioneering bands in the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. I'd recommend blackening era to the present era of their albums, plenty of tunes all great different mixtures of their mighty power!
9: Disturbed
Disturbed is an American heavy metal band from Chicago, Illinois. The band comprises vocalist David Draiman, bassist John Moyer, guitarist Dan Donegan, and drummer Mike Wengren. They have been around since 1994 and i have been a fan of them since 2006 yes 10 years and they just have the raw powerful sound, the meaningful lyrics and the memorable songs. You can not say you have not heard of this band surely, soon as i go OH WA AH AH AAAH! That primal cry which is part of the bands signature sound aswell as the guy disturbed's mascot surely you know of them. Check out all of their albums i love them all to bits and i really hope to see them live one day!
8: Killswitch Engage
A band who's singer i have met and the band i have seen once yet always regard it highly as one of the best gigs i have been to yes it's KILLSWITCH ENGAGE! I first came about from them back when holy diver their dio cover was released and it was sick! I proceeded to then check them out more and more of Howard's era and i loved it and since Jesse came back i have been going through all of KSE's albums and honestly one of my fave bands ever. Killswitch Engage primarily play metalcore, combining sounds from extreme metal and hardcore. Like some modern metalcore bands, Killswitch Engage vocally combine singing, screaming vocals, and growls in their music. Killswitch Engage's music mixes "crushing" riffs, double bass drum patterns, power chords, dual-guitar harmonies, often punctuated with pinch harmonic squeals in their music and breakdowns that one can expect from the metalcore genre. Albums to check out would be Incarnate,Disarm the descent and As daylight dies.
7: Slipknot
I believe Slipknot is the first fully heavy band that got me sucked into metal a lot more and it was not just due to their sound either but also their looks their costumes the masks. The mystery of who is behind there you know. As a kid i was already into rock and some metal tracks but you know took me years you know to develop into the metal loving guy i am today and i thank friends and guitar hero for some of that work. The band put on a hell of a live show. I would recommend all of their songs but to put it more specific, Devil in i,before i forget, duality, left behind, eyeless, psychosocial and vermillion part 2 are must hears.
6: Dream Theater
Dream Theater is the perfect marriage of prog rock and heavy metal. If you've never heard the group, a good starting place is "The Big Medley" from their 1995 EP A Change of Seasons. It somehow combines Pink Floyd's "In the Flesh," Kansas' "Carry On Wayward Son," Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Turn It On Again" by Genesis. It's a tough thing to pull off, but they do it with ease. That's not to imply Dream Theater is a cover band. The group has 11 studio albums, dating all the way back to 1989. My recommended songs to listen to has to be Pull me under and dance of eternity i would recommend you hear those before you move onto their other work i love the band i have a couple of their albums not all of them.
5: Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden are one of the most revolutionary and original metal bands in the history of metal! Not only are they a huge role model for other bands such as Metallica but they are original in terms of lyrics and song meanings. Their songs aren't about sex and drugs but usually about mythical stories. Their signature songs captivate the audience with a slow and delicate introduction which jumps into a fitting arpeggio of melodies and riffs which makes up the concerts which are voted one of the best! I recommend you hear aces high, the trooper, run to the hills, number of the beast, phantom of the opera and hallowed be thy name.
4: Trivium
Another band i have liked since 2006 here. Trivium the Florida metal band which started 16 years ago have amassed 7 albums and sold over one million copies worldwide. Trivium are referred to multiple heavy metal styles such as metalcore, thrash metal, progressive metal, groove metal, and melodic death metal. Their style has evolved over the years from their earliest work on Ember to Inferno right through to In Waves, there is a clear thrash influence from Metallica and Machine Head, as well as some early In Flames. Upon the release of their second album Ascendancy, Trivium were identified as melodic metalcore with strong elements of thrash metal, with the third track on the album “Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr” becoming a permanent fixture in the band's set lists and the rest of the album selling itself to gold status. Ascendancy was even featured as one of Metal Hammer’s Albums of the Decade.Later releases have marked changes in the band. The Crusade was seen as a major shift in musical direction due to the change in vocal style, namely the absence of screaming, and some of the melodies featured. Trivium has the vocal styling of the raw power approach but is not afraid either to just lay that down and sing almost angelically. Albums i recommend are Ascendancy,Crusade,In waves,Vengeance falls and finally Silence in the snow.
3: Pantera
Easily my fave all time metal band. Back in the Eighties and Nineties, Pantera was the band for metal fans who felt Metallica didn't rock quite hard enough. The thrash metal band had a devoted following all through the Eighties, but the release of Cowboys From Hell brought them to a huge audience, which only grew two years later when they dropped Vulgar Display of Power. Long-simmering tensions between frontman Phil Anselmo and guitarist Dimebag Darrell reached a boiling point in 2003 and the band split up. The next year, Dimebag was touring with his new band, Damageplan (also featuring his brother and Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul), when a deranged fan killed him onstage in Columbus, Ohio. No clear motive for the murder has ever surfaced, but the tragedy forever ruled out the possibility of a Pantera reunion. I recommend all of their work but start with Walk then go to cowboys from hell then onto hollow and then commentary gates and then see how you feel. I have had people go "Scott this is not for me" and i have had people go "Yeah man fucking love this!"
2: Metallica
World of metal would never be the same without them. They've been through it all, creating masterpieces, even had their downfall. Yet they still came back strong with stuff like Death Magnetic.Nobody can deny their epic products especially in 80s,Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets are truly masterpieces of that era and of the 90s era the biggest masterpiece by them in the form of the black album. I would recommend a lot of albums and songs to check out i love Metallica. Black album, kill em all, master of puppets, death magnetic, load,s&m,garage inc and justice for all just go listen to those albums right now!
1: Black Sabbath
The founding fathers of metal. Has any metal group managed to improve on songs like "Children of the Grave," "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" or "War Pigs?" The Birmingham band started in 1968, and by the early Seventies were introducing metal to people all over the planet. They've been through an insane number of singers and lineups since, but in 1997 Sabbath reunienged Sevenfoldted the classic foursome for a triumphant series of reunion tours ever since. I recommend you hear war pigs, changes, paranoid, children of the grave, iron man and snowblind.
Why did i pick these bands?
Simple, each mean a lot to me and i love personally and each have different styles of metal on offer for you the reader to have a listen to. I do not wish to pick a band with one overall style, i wanted variety to show you that metal is not all screams and death and hail satan this and that but it's a powerful music genre, that helps people get through shit. Once you take the time and effort to understand what metal music is about you realize it’s not all about the satanic depressing music they are stereotyped as playing. Metal music isn’t simply about worshiping the devil and yelling about killing people. There are songs about politics, environmental, and social issues. These songs talk about real issues that are going on around this world. For example, Black Sabbath has a song called “War Pigs,” where they talk about how politicians start wars, but never fight in them. Metal songs can be used to raise public awareness about the government or politics. However, most people just see a bunch of grown men moshing around, and assume nothing good can come out of that. Society views metal fans as outcasts, and they are all considered to be weird. The metal music community is like a family. When you are at a metal concert everyone is like your brother. Because society views metal fans as outcasts, they can connect with each other on a more personal level. They have been rejected by everyone in society, told that they are weird, worthless, and hopeless. When they are at a show they are surrounded by people who have the same interests, and the same issues. They are no longer outcasts, but a part of something greater. When they are at a metal show, they are the popular ones, and everyone else is an outcast. There is more to the metal music than screams as i said. The genre is powerfully passionate and so are the fans. I love these bands listed and i love a lot more also but sadly i had only time to pick a definitive top 10 and this is what came out of my head in order.
